Dentition – Oral Prep
arrangement or condition of the teeth
Inability to Hold Bolus – Oral Prep
reduced lip closure, tongue shaping, tongue coordination
Bolus Formation – Oral Prep
lip seal/closure, jaw closure, tongue muscle tone, mobility
Reduced Labial or Buccal Tone – Oral Prep
weak chin muscles; materials may fall into anterior or lateral sulci
Abnormal Head Position – Oral Prep
too far anteriorly, against teeth can cause tongue thrust (CP, stroke, HI), bolus may be
forced out of mouth
Lingual Propulsion – Oral
elevation of the tongue
Swallowing apraxia, problems with peristaltic wave, tongue thrust, speed/cohesiveness
Swallowing Apraxia – Oral
repetitive rocking motion without posterior movement into pharynx; patient puts effort
into pushing bolus posteriorly but tongue moves back and forth
Stasis – Oral
residue on tongue from reduced strength, residue on anterior/lateral sulci, residue on
floor of the mouth
Premature Spillage into Pharynx – Oral
leaking of the bolus before swallow is initiatedreduced lingual control and soft palate posterior seal against tongue
Piecemeal Swallow – Oral
swallows one bolus multiple times, normal if large bolus, may be fear of swallowing
Slow Oral Transit – Oral
related to tongue movement/coordination, swallowing apraxia, spillage into sulci
Delayed Pharyngeal Swallow – Oral Transit
