PREFACE
v
One of the fastest-growing occupations in America today is that of the paralegal, or legal assistant. It
seems fitting, then, that you and your students should have a textbook that reflects the excitement
surrounding paralegal students and the current developments within the profession. We believe that
Paralegal Today: The Legal Team at Work, Seventh Edition, imparts that excitement to students. We have
spent great effort in ensuring that this edition is the most up-to-date, visually attractive, and easily
accessible teaching and learning package in today’s marketplace.
We have also attempted to bridge the gap between classroom learning and on-the-job realities by
including numerous “hands-on” activities. Included at the end of each chapter are questions, assignments,
and projects (as well as group projects and Internet exercises), which will provide your students the
opportunity to explore specific topics and practice certain skills—either inside or outside the classroom.
Additionally, each chapter of the text contains the following features, many of which deal with real-life
problems or challenges that arise in the workplace:
Developing Paralegal Skills—These features provide realistic examples of paralegals at workperforming
specific tasks; each feature concludes with “tips” or a “checklist” covering that particular task.
Ethics Watch—Each of these features describes a hypothetical situation in which a paralegalconfronts
an ethical problem and learns what to do in that situation.
Featured-Contributor articles—These are articles by prominent paralegal experts that providepractical
tips for paralegals.
Technology and Today’s Paralegal—This feature explores the ways in which technology is being
used in today’s legal workplace and how paralegals can take advantage of technology to organize
and simplify their tasks.
In the Office—These are tips for being a successful paralegal in the law-office environment.
Each of the above features can be incorporated into your lectures when and where appropriate and if
time permits.
This Instructor’s Manual is designed to help you integrate features, end-of-chapter questions and
assignments, and the supplements into your classroom presentations. The Practice Questions and
Assignments and Ethics Questions can be used in the classroom to introduce concepts. If using the
questions to introduce or review concepts, try having students answer the questions in groups or pairs and
then review the answers with the entire class. Time and equipment allowing, Internet Projects make good
homework assignments. Internet Projects provide interesting Web sites for the class to visit either through
work in the computer lab or an in-class demonstration. It is recommended that you check the URLs for the
Web sites prior to demonstrating them to the class or assigning them, as they change frequently. A few
even changed between the time the text was submitted for publication and the preparation of the Instructor’s
Manual. Students should likewise be instructed that when they find that a Web site in a question or
assignment that is no longer available, that they should Google the Web site to locate the updated site. At
the beginning of the Instructor’s Manual, we include a sample syllabus for your use. It is intended to provide

trips, and suggestions or on the Instructor Resources CD-ROM.
