[Jehovah\u2019s witness refuses blood transfusion]<br>\uf0b7 Beneficence: doing what is best for the patient [doing good]<br>\uf0b7 Fidelity: keeping your promises [follow through]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\uf0b7 Justice: fairness in care and allocation of resources [allocating money, resources, and<br>time fairly across multiple groups]<br>\uf0b7 Non-maleficence: do no harm [doctor prescribes wrong prescription; you should<br>question it]<br>\uf0b7 Veracity: telling the truth [if patient asks about diagnosis you have to tell them]<br>Chapter 4:<br>\uf0b7 Unintentional torts:<br>o Negligence: Had patient who is at high risk for falls and you forgot to set bed<br>alarm and they hurt themselves<br>\uf0b7 You did not mean to hurt patient but they did<br>o Malpractice: medication error \u2013 gave the wrong dose or type of medication<br>\uf0b7 Intentional torts:<br>o Assault: you threaten the patient<br>o Battery: follow through with threat<br>o False imprisonment: inappropriately restrain, or give chemical restraint<br>[sedative]<br>\uf0b7 Informed consent:<br>o Provider is responsible for communicating purpose of procedure and description<br>of procedure in the person\u2019s language. Explaining the risks vs benefits of<br>procedure. Alternative options to treat conditions.<br>o RN: provider gave patient all the information they need. Patient is competent to<br>give informed consent [drunk, high]. Have patient signs document. Notify<br>provider if patient has more questions or does not understand.<br>o Who can give informed consent:<br>\uf0a7 Competent adults<br>\uf0a7 Child: parent or legal guardian<br>\uf0a7 Durable prescription for DNR or AND [allow natural death].<br>\uf0b7 Mandatory reporting<br>o If you suspect abuse you have to report it [do not have to gather more data, do<br>not need proof, suspicion needs Describe what you see (not medical diagnosis)<br>o Subjective<br>\uf0a7 Direct quotes or identified as information gathered from patient<br>\uf0a7 Patient state
