A. Four Interview Techniques During a comprehensive health assessment, it is important to incorporate a wide variety of interview techniques to establish an effective therapeutic relationship with the patient, so the nurse can collect the appropriate data. Four interview techniques are utilized while assessing the social determinants within the comprehensive health assessment are the following: 1) appropriate introduction of the examiner to the patient, 2) appropriate atmosphere/environment, 3) utilization of nonverbal affirmation, and 4) the utilization of open-ended questions. The first technique that will be utilized is having an appropriate atmosphere/environment to help facilitate an effective therapeutic relationship between the patient and the examiner. The atmosphere/environment must be quiet, in a private room to minimize any distractions or interruptions to allow the patient to feel comfortable and respond openly to the assessment questions. The second technique that will be utilized is having an appropriate introduction of the examiner to the patient. The examiner will introduce themselves to the patient, ask the patient their first and last name, and how the patient would like the examiner to address them by. When the examiner appropriately addresses the patient in the way they like, it helps establish a positive & effective therapeutic relationship plus it builds trust. The third technique that is utilized is nonverbal affirmations like active listening, direct eye contact, facial expressions, body language, and many others, which will serve the best for you and your patient (Bickley, 2017). Nonverbal communication is a crucial first step in patient interaction (Bickley, 2017). Finally, the last step is asking open-ended questions.
