advocacy and systemic advocacy. Self-advocacy is when a person speaks
up for themselves or their own interests. Individual advocacy is when
someone else speaks up for a person or their interests. Systemic advocacy
is when a group of people or an organization speaks up for a cause or a
change that affects many people. For example, self-advocacy could be
when a person with a disability asks for reasonable accommodations at
work. Individual advocacy could be when a family member or a friend
helps a person with a disability access services or benefits. Systemic
advocacy could be when an organization campaigns for better laws or
policies that protect the rights of people with disabilities.
2. What are some of the benefits and challenges of advocacy? Give at least
two examples of each.
- Some of the benefits of advocacy are: it can empower people to have
more control over their lives, it can raise awareness and educate others
about important issues, it can influence decision-makers and create
positive changes in society, it can build solidarity and support among
people who share common goals or experiences. Some of the challenges
of advocacy are: it can be time-consuming and exhausting, it can face
resistance or opposition from powerful groups or individuals, it can
expose people to risks or threats such as harassment, discrimination or
violence, it can cause conflicts or disagreements among different
stakeholders or perspectives.
3. What are some of the skills and qualities that an effective advocate
should have? Explain why they are important and give an example of how
they can be applied in practice.
- Some of the skills and qualities that an effective advocate should have
are: communication skills, research skills, critical thinking skills,
empathy, creativity, resilience and ethical awareness. Communication
skills are important because they enable an advocate to express their views
clearly, persuasively and respectfully, as well as to listen and respond to
