To help students understand and fluently apply strategies for three-digit subtraction using regrouping
with base-10 blocks. Students will develop their mathematical reasoning and communication skills by
solving subtraction problems both independently and collaboratively.
Content Standard(s):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.2: Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms
based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction.
Student Learning Objective(s):
1. Content Objectives:
ï‚· Students will use base-10 blocks to solve three-digit subtraction problems that require
regrouping.
ï‚· Students will identify when regrouping is necessary and articulate the steps involved in
the regrouping process.
ï‚· Students will solve subtraction problems with up to three-digit numbers and
demonstrate their understanding by completing the "Marble Madness" worksheet.

ï‚· Students will verbally explain their reasoning and strategies for solving subtraction
problems.
ï‚· Students will accurately use subtraction-related vocabulary, including "regrouping,"
"base-10 blocks," "hundreds," "tens," and "ones."
