EDAPT – LEADERSHIP STYLES
Effective nurse leaders produce good outcomes in clinical, political, administrative, and academic settings
(Scully, 2015). Leadership may be an informal or formal role, but regardless of the role, nurse leaders must
have the skills to successfully lead and implement changes in complex healthcare environments. Possessing
strong self-knowledge based on principled values and beliefs is foundational to any leadership role. Before
leading to effective change, one must be competent in the ability to lead oneself, which includes the
development of essential leadership skills.
Leadership
Theory Definition
Transactional This leader is someone who values order and a more structured approach to
management. They rely on rigorous checks and balances with strict guidelines, rules, and
regulations to complete objectives on time or move people and supplies in an organized
way. These leaders are not a good fit for places where creativity and innovative ideas are
valued.
Transformational This leadership style can inspire positive changes in those who follow. These leaders are
generally energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. Not only are these leaders concerned
and involved in the process; they are also focused on helping every member of the group
succeed as well.
Servant These leaders are open-minded and not judgmental, who listen deeply and try to fully
understand others. This type of leader shares power, puts the needs of the employees
first, and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. This leadership style
inverts the norm, which puts subordinates as the main priority.
Authentic Leaders are true to themselves and their values. Followers gain trust and choose to follow
a leader when the leader’s actions reflect what they believe and value. These leaders are
not influenced by external forces, simply by their trust that what they are doing expresses
their actual values.
