Gender-Based Violence against Indigenous women in Canada seems to be a
contemporary issue that is consuming the media nowadays. The government of Canada says that
gender is identified by society according to the way males and females act and behave.1
In our
community, all gender is entitled to a peaceful life, but unfortunately, that is not the case because
violence is an injustice certain people face due to their gender. This atrocious behavior targets all
gender, such as women, girls, lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and Indigenous
women.2
Indigenous women and girls in Canada are more likely to experience assault,
kidnapped, and murder than non-indigenous women.3
Indigenous women are experiencing
gender-based violence at a higher rate in Canada due to the ongoing impact of colonization; they
face sexual abuse and discrimination in the justice and healthcare systems.
Violence against Indigenous women is still happening, and to understand how this issue
has come to exist and got to this point, it is essential to know where it is rooted. The colonial
history of Canada may help with the understanding of such violence.4 Colonialism is,
unfortunately, a legacy that Indigenous women inherited; they are still marginalized and face
