Instructor’s Manual For COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL HEALTH EDUCATION Tenth Edition Linda Meeks

INTRODUCTION
Teachers Teach as They Were Taught
As professionals responsible for the task of teaching others how to teach in a creative and
meaningful way, it is important that we remember a primary concept—teachers teach as they
were taught. No matter what you say, it is what you do that will have the greatest impact. With
this in mind, you might ask yourself, “What do I want the learners to do when they have
completed my course or workshop?” Most likely, you want them to be able to design curricula
and teach classes that motivate their students to practice life skills for health and to master the
performance indicators for the National Health Education Standards. Your commitment to this
task can be enhanced in three ways by using this Instructor’s Manual:
1. This Instructor’s Manual will help you in designing course syllabi and workshop outlines for
comprehensive school health education.
2. This Instructor’s Manual includes an overview, objectives, and instructional strategies for
each chapter of the text to help you provide effective instruction.
3. This Instructor’s Manual includes a test bank for each content chapter of the text. Of course,
a key of the correct answers is also provided.
Section 1: Designing Course Syllabi and Workshop Outlines
This section of the Instructor’s Manual contains three course syllabi and one workshop outline
that can be used to train future or current teachers and nurses to implement comprehensive
school health education. Two of the course syllabi included in this manual are intended for use
with the courses “The Teaching of Health in the Elementary School,” “The Teaching of Health
in Middle and Secondary Schools,” and “The Teaching of Health K–12.” They have been
creatively designed to be generic as to the grade levels for which they prepare teachers. One of
the course syllabi is for a three-credit or 30-session course, while the other is for a five-credit or
50-session course. There is also a course syllabus designed for the three-credit, 30-session course
“Comprehensive School Health Education for School Nurses.” Each of the course syllabi
contains the required text, course description, objectives, class policies, course requirements used
for evaluation, a grading scale, and a description of the class sessions. As a special bonus, there
are handouts and evaluation sheets for use with the course syllabi.
Also included in Section 1 of the Instructor’s Manual is a workshop outline that can be used by
professionals who provide staff development and teacher inservice. Often, state departments of
education require that a workshop outline including objectives be submitted if teachers receive
continuing education units or a graduate credit for participating in a workshop.
