Funeral Customs - At the time of death the following should be done:
-eyes of the deceased should be closed
-prayers are to be said/recited
-deceased should be covered
-Iman should be contacted but it is not required
Funeral Customs - Removal and Preparation of remains
-no restrictions on removal of the remains
-embalming is prohibited except when required by civil law
-Washing of the body
Funeral Customs - Dressing
- deceased is wrapped in white cloth rather than dressed in traditional clothing
-cloth should cover the entire body
-wrapping cloth should be three pieces for men and five pieces for women
-silky material should not be used
Funeral Customs - Casketing
- the body may be placed in a casket or may be buried uncasketed
- if casket is used: it should have no images or symbols and it may be made of any
material
Funeral Customs - Viewing
- viewing is optional and depends on family desire/local customs
- viewing may occur either before or after ceremony of washing
-once wrapped, the body should not be unwrapped for viewing
- body is not viewed once it is placed in the casket
