Module 6: Expressway Driving Flashcards

Follow these steps when exiting:-Check your rearview and side mirrors for traffic around your vehicle. Watch out for drivers who may be taking the same exit as you.-Turn your signal on well in advance of your exit.-Move into the deceleration lane and gradually reduce your speed.-Turn off your signal and tap your brake lights to warn traffic behind you that you are slowing down.Follow these steps when changing lanes:1.) Turn on your signal.2.) Check your mirrors.3.) Look over your shoulder and check your blind spot.4.) Switch lanes when you are confident it is safe to do so.5.) Turn your signal off.-Be alert to signal at just the proper time. If you signal too soon or too late, this confuses other drivers regarding your intentions. Most drivers are courteous and will make room for you if they know that you intend to change lanes. How are vehicles able to enter and leave the expressway without stopping?By using exits. What should you do if you start experiencing highway hypnosis?Pull over to the next exit and exercise, stretch, or take a short nap. What is one reason why expressways are safer than other roadways? There is a median dividing lanes of traffic. Here are some lane selection guidelines to keep in mind:-The right lane is principally used for exiting and entering the expressway. Traffic is going to be heavy in this lane, especially in rush hour traffic. If you are on an expressway with 3 or more lanes, it's best to avoid driving in the right lane unless you are going at a speed much slower than the flow of traffic, or you are preparing to enter or exit the expressway. However, if you are on an interstate route with just two lanes, you should drive in the right lane unless you are passing.-The left lane is typically reserved for passing. If you are not passing, you shouldn't be driving in this lane.Oversized trucks and trailers are not allowed in the left lane on many expressways.-The middle lane is for through traffic, if there are 3 lanes of travel, choose the middle lane for smoothest driving.

Interchanges:Road junctions that use grade separation, and ramps, to

permit traffic to cross over or under, and to enter or leave the expressway. A complete interchange has enough ramps to provide access from any direction of any road in the junction, to any other road and direction. In an incomplete interchange, there are at least one or more missing ramps, so not all turns and traffic movements are

possible.Velocitation is the phenomenon where you think that your car is traveling slower than it actually is.True.

Maximum speed limit on urban expressways: 65 mph.

On an expressway the left lane is generally used for what?Passing. What are some safety advantages of expressways? -There is no cross traffic.-There is a median dividing opposing lanes of traffic.-Pedestrians, slow-moving

vehicles, and non-motorized vehicles are not allowed on the expressway.-They are designed with wide shoulders, and extra-wide underpasses.

What should you do if you start feeling drowsy, or like you aren't able to focus on your driving?Pull over at the next exit and exercise, stretch, or take a short nap. What is an expressway?A controlled access multi-lane highway.Follow these steps if you experience car trouble: -Pull off the road completely-Turn on your hazard lights-Alert other drivers that you need help by raising the hood of your vehicle and/or tying a white cloth to your antennae or door handle.-Set up triangles or flares to alert other drivers.-Once you have taken the above steps if you were able to pull far off the road, stay in the vehicle. Keep the doors locked, your seat belts fastened, and your head against the head rest. This will help protect you if a vehicle crashes into you. If a stranger stops to offer you help, ask the person to call for emergency roadside assistance.Never stand on the expressway to direct traffic! If you aren't able to pull far enough off the roadway that you feel safe remaining in your vehicle, get out and walk to a safe place.Never stand directly behind or in front of your vehicle.Drivers passing may not see you, and you could be struck. You should never back up on the expressway. True.Which interchange design has eliminated the need for left turn arrows?Diverging diamond interchange. In order to prevent highway hypnosis:Try to take a break every 90 minutes. If you have a passenger with you who can drive, switch drivers. How fast should you drive on the expressway? A legal speed that matches the flow of traffic. How far ahead should you scan for vehicles, objects, and animals on or near the expressway?20-30 seconds.Keep these tips in mind while merging:-Some drivers have mistaken the exit ramp for the entrance ramp. This is a very dangerous mistake! There are signs posted on the expressway to help prevent this. These signs say "Do Not Enter" or "Wrong Way".-Don't ever back up on an expressway! If you find you've entered on the wrong entrance ramp, just keep driving until you can get off at the next exit.-Lanes used for merging and entrance ramps vary in length and some are much shorter than others. When merging, pay attention to how much space remains in the merge lane.-When in the acceleration lane, do not merge into traffic until the solid white line has ended.-You are required to yield the right-of-way to traffic already on the expressway.-Don't ever stop in the merging lane unless it's imperative to do so.What is an acceleration lane?An extra lane provided at the entrance to an expressway to provide a vehicle distance in which to build up speed to match the flow of traffic. What should drivers do if they miss their exit? Keep driving until the next exit, get back on the expressway going the opposite direction, and return to the exit you
