In patients who exhibit depression, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly chosen as a medication for treatment. SSRIs are often chosen because they:

are more efficacious than other drug classes.

are safer than other medications for depression.

corTAct

require fewer laboratory tests for follow up. Incorrect

help patients reach normal states more quickly.

Explanation:

SSRIs are commonly chosen over tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and other medication classes for depression because they have fewer side effects and are thus better tole by patients, and because they are safer if overdo occurs. The SSRIs have never been shown to be more efficacious than the TCAs, though publication bias may demonstrate this. Generally, levels of antidepressant medications are not monitored and so laboratory testing is ne an issue.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

Full effect make be delayed for ≥ 4 weeks

Increased risk for bleeding in combination with aspirin, NSAIDs, and warfarin

Monitor for hyponatremia and/or hypoglycemia

Check compatibility with other medications for drug-drug interactions:

• Potent inhibitors of hepatic cytochrome P450 isoenzymes inhibiting metabolism of other many other drugs leading to toxicity (TCAS, antiarrhythmics, neuroleptics, warfarin, beta blockers, etc.)

o Risk for serotonin syndrome (dextromethorphan, MAOIS, TCAs, triptans etc.)

May not be taken within 5 weeks of taking MAO inhibitors
