1. What is nursing informatics and what are its main goals? Nursing informatics is the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. The main goals of nursing informatics are to improve the quality and safety of patient care, enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing processes, support evidence-based practice and research, and facilitate lifelong learning and professional development for nurses. 2. What are the four domains of the Nursing Informatics Framework (NIF) and what do they represent? The four domains of the NIF are data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Data are discrete facts or observations that have no meaning by themselves. Information is data that have been processed, organized, or interpreted to make them meaningful or useful. Knowledge is information that has been synthesized, analyzed, or applied to a specific context or situation. Wisdom is knowledge that has been evaluated, refined, or adapted to guide actions or decisions. 3. What are some examples of nursing informatics competencies and how can they be assessed? Nursing informatics competencies are the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that nurses need to use information technology effectively in their practice. Some examples of nursing informatics competencies are: - Basic computer literacy: the ability to use common software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, email, and internet browsers. - Information literacy: the ability to find, evaluate, and use relevant and reliable information sources for clinical or educational purposes. - Information management: the ability to collect, store, organize, retrieve, and share data and information in a secure and ethical manner. - Clinical decision support: the ability to use information systems or tools that provide guidance or recommendations for clinical decisions or actions. - Telehealth: the ability to use communication technologies such as videoconferencing, remote monitoring, or mobile devices to deliver or receive health care services at a distance. Nursing informatics competencies can be assessed by various methods such as self-assessment surveys, performance evaluations, simulations, portfolios, or examinations. 4. What are some of the benefits and challenges of electronic health records (EHRs) for nursing practice?
