1. Hiatal Hernia
Answer
is the opening of the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes becomes enlarged and part
of the stomach moves up into the lower thorax. The incidence is more common in Women than
Men.
2. Clinical Manifestations of Hiatal Hernia
Answer
50% of the people are asymptomatic and people that have this also have heartburn,
regurgitation, dysphagia, fullness or chest pain after eating. Non-Pharmacological Management
of HH- Small, frequent meals that can pass easily through the esophagus. Stay upright for at
least 1 hour after eating to prevent reflux or movement of the hernia. Finally elevate head or bed
on 4 to 8 inch blocks.
3. Surgical Management for Hiatal Hernia
Answer
Reserved for pts when medications do not affective in relieving symptoms and may be required
for emergency situations of strangulation, obstruction or hemmorhage.
4. Esophageal Diverticulum
Answer
is the outpouching of the mucosa that protrudes through a weak portion of the musculature and
may occur in 1 of three areas of the esophagus
Pharyngoesophageal, mid esophageal, and epiphernic.
