NUR 330 GI Medications
1. Antacids
- Neutralize stomach acid
- inhibits production of pepsin, decreases irritation to stomach lining and symptoms of peptic
ulcers
2. antacid nursing considerations
- interfere with H2 blockers, give 1 hour before or 2 hours after
- magnesium contraindicated for patients with renal failure
- report hematemesis or bloody stools
- take with water or milk
3. antacid medications
- Magnesium hydroxide causes diarrhea
- Calcium carbonate and Aluminum hydroxide causes constipation
- Sodium bicarbonate
4. H2 receptor blockers
reduce gastric acid secretion
- side effects
diarrhea, muscle pain, rash, confusion, drowsiness
- Do not give at the same time as antacids
