• Stomatitis and care
o What is stomatitis?
â–ª Inflammation within the oral cavity.
o Assessment of Stomatitis:
â–ª Blisters in the oral cavity with pain and swelling
â–ª Fever
â–ª Difficulty Eating and drinking.
o Nursing Interventions:
â–ª Provide frequent oral care (q 2hrs)
• Mouth rinsing with saline, baking soda
â–ª Monitor VS (temp)
â–ª Monitor I&O
â–ª Be alert for sx of dysphagia (risk for aspiration)
▪ Offer bland, nonacidic foods – cool liquids
â–ª Apply topical analgesics
o Meds:
â–ª Tetracycline Syrup
â–ª Minocycline, chlorhexidine mouthwash
â–ª Acyclovir
â–ª Nystatin oralsuspension
• Leukoplakia vs. Erythroplakia
o Leukoplakia: thickened, white patchesthat cannot be easily flaked off
â–ª Usually benign
o Erythroplakie: red, velvety mucosal leasion
â–ª Considered precancerous
â–ª Most commonly on floor of mouth

• GERD risk factors and treatment
o Risk factors:
â–ª Obesity/overweight
â–ª Hiatal hernias
o Treatment:
â–ª Nutrition Therapy, lifestyle changes and drug therapy.
â–ª Nutrition: eliminate foodsthat decrease LES pressure (peppermint, chocolate,
alcohol, fatty foods, caffeine, carbonated beverages, spicy/acidic food)
â–ª Lifestyle changes:smoking cessation, decrease size of meals, avoid eating atleast
3 hours before bed. Sleed 6-12 elevated.
