1. What is the recommended daily intake of folate or folic acid for

pregnant women and why is it important?

Answer: The recommended daily intake of folate or folic acid for pregnant

women is 600 to 1000 micrograms (mcg). Folate or folic acid is a B

vitamin that helps prevent serious problems with the developing brain and

spinal cord (neural tube defects) in the baby. It also reduces the risk of

premature birth and low birth weight.

2. What are some good sources of calcium for pregnant women and how

much do they need per day?

Answer: Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth for both the

mother and the baby. It also supports healthy functioning of the

circulatory, muscular and nervous systems. Pregnant women need 1000

milligrams (mg) of calcium per day; pregnant teenagers need 1300 mg per

day. Some good sources of calcium are dairy products, fortified cereals,

juices, tofu, broccoli, kale, almonds and sardines.

3. How many grams of protein do pregnant women need per day and what

are some high-protein foods?

Answer: Protein is critical for the growth of the baby's tissues and organs,

including the brain. It also helps with breast and uterine tissue growth

during pregnancy. Pregnant women need 70 to 100 grams of protein per

day, increasing each trimester. Some high-protein foods are lean meat,

poultry, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, soy products and dairy

products.
