Overview Today, new challenges have emerged in the field of education, presenting students and teachers with greater opportunities and higher demands. Globalization, new forms of communication technology, changing demographics in the population, and changing values and attitudes among the generations all contribute to the need to adapt education to new realities. Clearly, both society and schools are in transition. Chapter 1 discusses these changes and their impact on schooling and provides a brief overview of how the text will talk about these issues. Objectives 1. Students will be able to identify the institutions that are in transition in the United States, as well as the nature of those transitions. 2. Students will begin to understand the nature of changing demographics in the United States. 3. Students will begin to understand the ways in which changes in society affect schooling and social institutions. 4. Students will be able to explain the nature of the ―clash of cultures‖ between teachers and students. 5. Students will differentiate between multicultural, intercultural, and global education.
