- Course Description
This course requires students to apply knowledge and skills to the care of adult patients in a simulated laboratory and acute care environments experiencing needs resulting from complex multisystem disruptions. The student will apply the nursing process and utilize information literacy skills to achieve deliberative and competent decision-making that is grounded in evidence based practice to achieve best practice outcomes.Emphasis will be placed on prioritization of care through collaboration with other members of the health care team, patients and their families.II. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1.Apply knowledge derived from the bio/psycho/social sciences, humanities, and the nursing process to achieve deliberative and competent decision-making outcomes which are grounded in evidence based practice for clients with complex multisystem co-morbidities.
2.Collaborate with clients, families and health care personnel to achieve best practice outcomes.
3.Utilize information literacy skills to integrate research findings that guide (or lead to) best practice decisions.
4.Utilize the nursing process to provide safe, effective care that reflects the ethical values of the nursing profession within current practice standards and the legal parameters of the profession.
5.Utilize therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients and their families/significant others.

7.Provide and facilitate sensitive multi-cultural care to clients who are experiencing complex diagnosis and co-morbidities 8.Demonstrate professional accountability through identification of self-learning needs and continued professional development.
9.Implement a plan of care for clients with acute care needs/co-morbidities, including professional referrals and community resource consults.
10.Implement a health-teaching plan for selected acutely ill adults and families with complex co-morbid diagnosis and alterations in health.
11.Perform complex nursing interventions to meet the physiologic, psycho/social/spiritual/cultural needs of clients in the acute care/critical care environment.
12.Analyze legal and ethical implications for persons experiencing multi-system disease processes.
13.Safely prioritizes care for two or more clients in the acute care setting with evidence of effective clinical decision making.
14.Apply critical thinking to provide cost effective, quality care for patients and their families experiencing multi-system disruptions.
15.Select learning experiences which contribute to continued growth and professional development.

EMERGENCY Unit CLINICAL OBJECTIVES The student will complete the following (under the direction of the Clinical Instructor or
Registered Nurse):
- Provide basic nursing care for the emergency client/patient.
- Obtain and record vital signs as indicated.
- Obtain a client/patient interview or history.
- Locate selected supplies and equipment.
- Review emergency charting as identified.
- Observe client/patient discharge and related teaching
- Locate client/patient teaching resources in the emergency department.
- Observe prioritization of client/patient care.
- Initiate intravenous therapy where available.

CRITICAL CARE CLINICAL OBJECTIVES
The student will perform the following under the direction of the Registered Nurse or

- Perform a head to toe assessment for the critical care patient, including vital signs.
- Interpret selected client laboratory values and assessment parameters with the
