CSET SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBTEST 1 EXAM /

ACTUAL EXAM QUESTIONS WITH CORRECT

VERIFIED ANSWERS/ RATED A+

What are the 4 forces that govern the universe? - ANSWER - Gravity, nuclear, electromagnetic, Weak Force.

Gravity - ANSWER - acts like glue, holding stars, planets, & galaxies together. It causes dispersed materials to form, it is responsible for keeping the planets & comets in orbits around the sun, it is responsible for keeping satellites in orbit, it causes tides, it helps to control temp., allowing stars to expand when its core temp. increased & increases in gravitation if the stars core temp. cools too much, is a dynamic process of Earth through processes like erosion etc.

Nuclear Force - ANSWER - Responsible for binding protons & neutrons in the nucleus. The residual strong force prevents the repulsion between the protons from pushing the nucleus apart. Very Strong, strongest of the 4 but has a short range.

Electromagnetic Force - ANSWER - Depends on electrical charge instead of mass, carried via photons & holds atoms & molecules together. It effects neg. & post. charged particles. Both men. & electric forces are as a result of photon exchange. Electric force like charges repel & Magnetic force like & unlike repel.

Weak force - ANSWER - plays a role in nuclear reactions, fusion & fission. Plays a role in radioactive decay.

Lever - ANSWER - object is pivoted about an axis, the load & effort can be applied on either or the same side. Load=weight. Effort is the amount that is needed to move the weight.

pg. 2 Pulleys - ANSWER - use a wheel & rope to move an object.

inclined plane - ANSWER - plane surface that is placed @ an angle to the horizontal, it’s easier to move an object up the incline then to move it vertically upwards.

Electro static Phenomena - ANSWER - Comes from the forces that electric charges exert on each other. The force is between the 2 charges. If they are opposite charges they ATTRACT, the same charge REPEL. This occurs when there is buildup of a charge on a surface object, very strong & difficult to separate opposite charges. (static& electricity from a magnet)

Magnetostatic Phenomena - ANSWER - the study of magnetic fields. charges are either stationary or in direct current.

Explain Charges or poles - ANSWER - When an object is magnetized, all dipoles (molecular magnets) become aligned. A magnets pole is a point in a magnet @ which its magnetic force is concentrated. 2 poles North & SOUTH point to its magnetic pole (north / south) The 1st law of magnetism states that LIKE poles REPEL & UNLIKE poles attract.

Class of Luminosity - ANSWER - Roman Numerals I to V I= supergiant’s greatest raid II= bright Giants III= Giants IV= subgiants V= Main seq. stars (bigger than the sun)

Simple Model of how fusion in stars produces heavier elements - ANSWER - -when 2 nuclei collide it produces a heavier nucleus.-The high temp., the harder they will collide, higher the chance of fusion.-The proton-proton chain (4 hydrogen nuclei combine to produce a helium nucleus) 2 / 3

pg. 3 1.) 2 protons fuse together to form a deuterium nucleus (1 proton & 1 neutron), takes place 2x = 2 set. nuclei.

2.) det. nucleus & proton fuse= helium 3 (2 protons & 1 neutron) takes place 2x 3.) 2 helium 3 nuclei fuse = helium 4 (2 protons & 2 neutrons) 2 excess protons r released.

Predictable patterns of stars & planets in time & location - ANSWER - -most objects in the night sky move in predict. patterns due to Earths spin about its axis & it's orbit around the sun.

- Stars & planets: rise in the East & set in the West, as does the sun.

-The sun only does this in Spring & fall equinoxes.

Moon's Phases - ANSWER - *New Moon>Waxing Crescent>1st Quarter>Waxing Gibbons>3rd Quarter>Waning Crescent> Back to New Moon.-The phases are based on its position relative to the Sun as it orbits Earth.-Each complete cycle takes 29 1/2 days.-moons appearance changes as it orbits Earth, it's rise & set times also change.

New Moon - ANSWER - -Moon lies close to the sun & so it is hidden by the sun's bright Light.-Rises @ 6am & highest @ noon, Sets @ 6pm

Waxing Cresent - ANSWER - Rises @ 9am, highest @ 3pm & sets @ 9pm.

1st Quarter - ANSWER - Rises @ noon, highest @ 6pm & sets @ 12am(midnight)

Waxing Gibbons - ANSWER - moon is starting to grow rises @ 3pm, highest @ 9pm, sets @ 3am
