Symbolism -Discarded the visible world of surface appearances for the inner world of fantasy -Forerunner of Surrealism -Rousseau, Redon, Ryder

Modern Architecture -Designed structures that have never existed before such as suspension bridges, grain elevators, train sheds, factories, warehouses, and high-rise office buildings -"Form follows function" -New designs were to express a building's commercial purpose, without any overlay of historical ornament -Sullivan (virtually invented the skyscraper)

Modern Art 2 / 4

-Art concerned itself less with exterior visual reality and more with interior vision -Portrayed contemporary life rather than historical events -Declared all subjects fair game and liberated form (cubism) from traditional rules and freed color (Fauvism) from accurately representing an object -Relentless quest for radical freedom of expression -Artists stressed private concerns, experiences, and imagination as the sole sources of art

Fauvism -Use of color without reference to actual appearance, exaggerated vibrant color. Used color as a way to express feelings -Experimenting with new ways to express their emotional response to a scene (generally landscapes or seascapes painted outdoors) -Clashing colors and bold distortions of form and perspective, vigorous brushstrokes, flat linear patterns, used the bare canvas as part of overall design -Freer, more individual ways of communication emotion -Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, Rouault, Braque

20th Century Sculpture 3 / 4

-Brancusi -Shaved away detail almost to the vanishing point

-Saw reality in terms of a few basic, universal shapes: the egg,

the smooth pebble, and the blade of grass

Cubism -Broke up forms to recombine them in new ways -Delivers a multi-faceted fly's eye view of reality

-Analytic Cubism: Analyzed the form of objects by shattering

them into fragments spread out on the canvas. Worked in nearly a monochrome palette, using only brown, green, and later gray in order to analyze form without the distraction of bright colors

-Synthetic Cubism: Employs strong colors and decorative

shapes. Incorporated stenciled lettering and paper scrapes into paintings -Picasso, Braque, Gris, Leger

Futurism -Kinetic Art -Challenged artists to show "courage, audacity, and revolt" and to celebrate "a new beauty, the beauty of speed" -Took place in Italy -The key was movement.
