With this strategy, "do the same to both" or compensation, the problem solver subtracted one from each number to get a problem which did not involve regrouping. Students begin using this strategy with single digit numbers. For example, 7 - 2 is the same as 6 - 1 etc. This ties into the concepts needed for number sense.
