Rule #1: If age is mentioned in the question, it is important to know it.
Rules #2: If the question gives you a timeframe, it is critically important to know. In fact, it will help you pick between the top two answers. Look at the timeframe. Phrase that answer to question the when. Ex. For two weeks.
Rules #3: Words at the end of the question are extremely important. Most important words at the end of the question.
Rule #4: If you don’t know specifics go general. Ex. Disease Schizophrena. Replace with psych patient and a drug. If you don’t know what Thioridazine is.
Rule #5: If the question says need further teaching or further instruction you are looking for an incorrect answer.
Rule #6:
When they ask you first, use nursing process to choose between top two answers.
Rule #7 If a question has an opposite word. It is very important.
Example:
High &. Low Increase & Decrease Tacky & Brady Constipation & Diarrhea
Rule #8 When a question asks what will you question. Ask yourself, what is the big danger? This will tell you your answer.
Question: IV @150/hour. Which order should be questioned?
Think: For which client where a high flow rate IV is can cause fluid overload.
- 17 year old migraine
- CVA stroke
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Pat. With M.S. end stage
Answer is C. CHF
Rule #9:
Do not guess an answer with a number if you are not fairly certain. Be fairly certain of the number. If you don’t know it, then don’t select the exact number.
Rule #10:
Do not guess answers with extreme words unless you are fairly certain. Severe word is extreme.
Rule #11:
Questions ask for impending signs. Don’t pick classic signs of the disease. If you have classic signs of disease do they have the disease? Yes.
Impending means they don’t have the disease.
