INCORPORATED (C)

SYNPOSIS

Patrick Guten was an effective and highly motivated executive at 3DP Incorporated (3DP), a company specializing in manufacturing objects with three-dimensional printing. Guten often told his friends that he thought he could be the next Steve Jobs, taking advantage of the “next great opportunity” to change the world by producing and marketing his own creations. However, his inability to deal effectively with his subordinates, peers, and superiors, as shown by instances of abrasive behaviour (described throughout the cases), contributed to his eventual downfall.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The main themes of the three-part case series include career derailment, leadership development, coaching, mentoring, the importance of feedback, and managing careers. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to • understand the need for reflection in the learning-to-lead process in order to develop self-awareness, which is essential to good leadership and leadership development; • appreciate the importance of coaching, mentoring, and feedback for developmental purposes and hence personal growth as a leader; • develop an understanding of how to actively manage a leadership career and the importance of identifying what is needed to be successful in the next job or leadership position; and • formulate a solid understanding of the factors that contribute to career derailment.1 All information presented in the teaching note is supported by information and sources contained in the associated case document unless otherwise specified. This Teaching Note is authorized for use only by ELENA PIKULINA, University of British Columbia until Feb 2024. ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

The class should be split in half to align with the two versions of the 3DP Incorporated case: (A) and (B).Both versions describe the same events but from the perspective of two different people: Patrick Guten (A) and Limor Anouk (B). Students should be urged to not share and discuss the case they receive with anyone who received the alternate case prior to the class discussion.

  • As Guten, how do you view yourself and your relationship with Anouk?
  • How would you describe your career at 3DP? What accounts for your success?
  • How do you see your future at 3DP? What is your ultimate ambition and why?
