PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE CHAPTER
The purpose of this chapter is to give students an understanding of the different views used in the construction trades. As a continuation of Chapter 14, it gives students a chance to create sketches of piping systems with respect to plan views and elevation views. The chapter also introduces students to basic drawing symbols used in commercial plumbing drawings. There are also discussions around orthographic, isometric, and oblique sketches and how they are used. It is important to remind students that the dimensions and angles are skewed in isometric and oblique sketches, so drawing them to scale may alter how they look. They can have dimensions listed on them for reference.
CHAPTER OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are addressed in this chapter:
15-1 Demonstrate the ability to make simple drawings in plan and elevation view.15-2 Interpret symbols on drawings to correctly identify objective of the plans.[return to top] 2 © 2025 Cengage Learning, Inc. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
The following discussion questions are for you to use as you wish. You can assign these questions several ways: in a discussion forum in your LMS, as whole-class discussions in person, or as a partner or group activity in class.
1.How could an isometric or oblique sketch be used to make a parts estimate? (LO: 15-1, 15-2) 2.If there is a line type being used on a set of plans and the reader is not familiar with it, where
would they find its meaning? (LO: 15-1, 15-2)
3.If objects above the cutting plane in a plan view are hidden (for example, the upper cabinets in a kitchen), why is it important the technician to know about these items? (LO: 15-1, 15-2) 4.Can the type of material use be determined by the symbols used in a sketch? (LO: 15-2) [return to top]
