CHAPTER 1
Inquiry: The Path; Discovery: The Destination
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Chapter 1 introduces the concept of discovery learning, and stresses that the overarching goal in the science classroom is to help elementary students learn to make their own discoveries in order to be prepared for the dynamics of the real world. The authors provide practical thinking strategies and skills that can be used to teach elementary students about discovery learning and inquiry. The context for the chapter is helping those preparing to teach elementary students feel comfortable in their roles as future teachers of science, both in terms of content and pedagogy. This involves looking at the formal requirements of teaching, such as studying the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the personal aspect of teaching, such as personal strengths, weaknesses, and attitudes toward science.
Engage The following handout can serve as a medium for an individual student to gather his or her recollections, or as a summary sheet for information gathered from the class as a whole.
