It discusses the ways that natural selection can help species adapt to change over the course of many generations (for example, reflexes, modal action patterns, and general behavioral traits), but points out natural selection’s shortcomings in helping individuals adapt to change within their lifespans. It discusses how learning can solve this problem and uses an example of habituation to illustrate this. Finally, it discusses how both evolution and learning shape behavior, highlighting the false dichotomy in the nature vs.nurture debate.Chapter Objectives 1-1 Explain how natural selection helps species cope with change.1-2 Explain how natural selection produces adaptive behavior in the form of reflexes, modal action patterns, and general behavioral traits.1-3 Describe the limits of natural selection.1-4 Explain why learning can be defined in relation to behavior change.1-5 Describe how habituation is an example of learning.1-6 Explain why the nature–nurture debate oversimplifies the origins of behavior.Complete List of Chapter Activities and Assessments Chapter Objective Activity/Assessment Source (i.e., PPT slide) Duration 1-1 Explain how natural selection helps species cope with change.Review Questions 1, 3 Text 5–10 mins Additional Discussion Question #1 Instructor’s Manual 5–10 mins
