TEST BANK

Providing a test bank for a children's literature textbook is difficult and problematic. First, most instructors view the reading of children's books as the most important component of a course in children's literature. This test bank cannot assess that central aspect of the course and can only be used to assess textbook information, not the deeper understanding of story and diversity at the heart of this textbook. Other forms of assessment are needed to evaluate the actual reading of children’s books by students. Many instructors, for example, ask students to submit reading records that summarize plots of books and provide responses to the books they are reading independently and in groups; others select titles from a reading list of books submitted to the instructor by a student and ask for responses in writing about perspectives on these books.Alternatively, these responses can be oral through interviewing students about selected books to assess the ways in which students are thinking about the books they read.Student projects and inquiries are an alternative method of inviting students to explore the content of each chapter and to engage in an investigation that takes them beyond that content. These inquiries connect the content of the chapters with student interests and take them more deeply into references and books. Students have to understand and apply the content of the chapter, requiring a much deeper understanding of that content than is evident in a test. At the end of each chapter in the textbook are Invitations for Further Investigation that can be used for this type of evaluation. These investigations can also be found in the Instructors Manual. This manual provides a test bank with traditional test items including both recognition and production test items. These test items are arranged by chapter for the convenience of instructors who may assign the chapters in a different sequence. Duplication of content within the test items of a single chapter and varying complexity of items allows the instructor to tailor tests to suit students.

The types of test items included here are:

1.Multiple choice items. These items require only recognition of correct responses.

2.Essay items. These are production items and require some synthesis or application of knowledge. They also include requests for students’ individual experiences or perspectives. 3 / 4
