Initial Steps 1.Set up an appointment for your driving test.

Languages The knowledge test can be administered in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language.If an interpreter is needed for a behind-the-wheel driving test, The Department of Motor Vehicles provides interpreters at no cost to the customer. If you need an interpreter, contact the DMV staff and an appointment will be scheduled for when a foreign language or ASL interpreter is available.
Knowledge Test Information The knowledge test consists of 36 multiple-choice questions. Applicants should correctly answer at least 30 questions to pass the test.All information needed to pass the test can be found in the California Driver Handbook.The use of testing aids is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, the California Motorcycle Handbook, the California Driver Handbook, cheat sheets, or electronic communication devices. If any testing aids are used during the knowledge test, the knowledge test will be marked as a failure. Action may also be taken by the DMV against your driving privileges or the driving privileges of anyone who assists you in cheating during the examination process.The DMV utilizes an automated TouchScreen Terminal (TST) to administer the knowledge test.To allow for sufficient time to complete the test, knowledge tests will not be administered
after 4:30 p.m.
