NCLEX-PN: Basic Life Support quest...

10 terms Jonathan_Intud Preview Commu 36 terms nur For the healthcare provider, determining unresponsiveness of the victim is the first action Rescuers should follow the CAB formula: C: compressions; a: airway; B: breathing The adult chest is compressed to a depth of at least 2 inches and compressions should be hard and fast at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute

A compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2 is recommended

If 2 rescuers are present, to prevent fatigue, rescuers may switch positions after two minutes, or after five cycles of

compressions and ventilation at a ratio of 30:2

Rescue breaths are delivered over one second; ventilation's are delivered at a rate of one breath every 6 to 8 seconds, or 8 to 10 ventilations per minute

Steps in adult CPR: 1. ensure that the scene is safe before

approaching the victim. 2. First determine whether the victim is unresponsive with or without breathing by tapping on the shoulder and shouting "are you okay? "; activate the EMS system; obtain the AED Attach and use the AED IF ABLE; AND THEN BEGIN CPR USING C A B. 3. Check for pulse and if no pulse felt within 10 seconds, begin chest compressions

CPR continued: if a pulse is felt, give one breath every 6

to 8 seconds if the victim is not breathing and recheck the pulse every two minutes ...Actions for the healthcare provider for performing adult CPR

  • Determine unconsciousness. 2. Check for pulse at carotid artery. 3. Perform
  • chest compressions. 4. Open airway, using head tilt - chin lift method. 5. Check breathing and deliver breaths For CPR, a child is defined as a person between one and eight years of age In a child, if rescuer is alone, five cycles of compressions and breaths, which will take about two minutes, are done before activating the emergency response system and obtaining an AED

In a child, one hand maybe used for chest compressions in the center of the chest between the nipples, and ventilations are delivered more gently than in an adult Chest compressions in a child are usually 2 inches in depth and the compression

to breath ratio is 30:2 with a single rescuer

After five cycles of CPR, if no response and AED is available, apply it and follow prompts When doing CPR, an infant is defined as a person younger than one year old In infant cpr, if rescuer is alone, five cycles of compressions and breaths, which takes about two minutes, are done before activating the emergency response system and obtaining AED If second rescuer is present, they can activate emergency response system while the first attends to the infant In infant CPR, the compression to breath ratio is 30:2 Use brachial pulse to assess circulation In infant CPR, the breastbone is compressed 1.5 inches at a rate of 100 times per minute with the use of two fingers, just below the nipple line Provide mouth to nose when delivering breaths to an infant When using an AED, if there is a shockable rhythm resume CPR immediately for two minutes after the shock to minimize interruptions If there is a non-shockable rhythm resume CPR immediately for two minutes and check rhythm every two minutes In a choking victim, perform five quick in and up abdominal thrusts rapidly until the obstruction becomes dislodged or victim becomes unconscious If victim becomes unconscious, place in supine position and begin CPR for two minutes and then activate the EMS In a choking infant, deliver five back slaps with the heel of the hand between the shoulder blades and then five chests thrusts at same location used for chest compressions If pregnant victim loses consciousness as she is choking, she is placed on her back, then a wedge is inserted under her right flank and hip to displace the uterus to the left side of the abdomen to prevent supine hypotension After placing pregnant choking victim on right side, the rescuer attempts ventilations; if unsuccessful the rescuer positions the hands as for chest compressions and delivers firm chest compressions to remove the obstruction If defibrillation is needed in a pregnant victim, paddles are placed one rib interspace higher than usual because the heart is displaced slightly
