If u do not have a driver's license from California or some other state - ANS must apply for an instruction permit before taking a behind the wheel drive test to get your driver's license

To apply for instruction permit or driver's license - ANS - proof of identity

• two proofs of residency (that u live in California)
• legal full name document
• social security number

Apply for Class C instruction permit - ANS - complete a driver's license and id card application

• provide documents
• pay nonrefundable application fee
• pass knowledge tests
• pass vision test

Apply for Class C instruction permit if u are under 18 yrs old - ANS - must be at least 15 1/2 yrs old

• have parent or guardian sign and approve application and accept financial responsibility
• wait to use ur instruction permit until u start behind the wheel driver training with an

instructor who will validate the permit

Applying for drivers license - ANS - practice drivign with a california licensed driver who is at least 18 (25 for minors) person must sit close enough to take control of vehicle if needed

• pass behind the wheel drive test

if u are under 18 and applying for drivers license - ANS - be at least 16 yrs old

• have an instruction permit from california or some other state for at least 16 months(or turn

18 yrs old) before scheduling behind the wheel drive test

• prove u completed both driver education and driver training
• practice driving for at least 50 hours with a california licensed driver who is at least 25 yrs old,

ten hours must be at night

on the day of behind the wheel drive test u must bring - ANS - instruction permit or driver's license if u have one

• another califonria licensed driver who is at least 18 yrs old (25 for minors) unless u are already

licensed to drive

• safe vehicle
• valid proof of insurance and vehicle registration
• if u plan to use rental vehicle for drive test, name must be listed on rental contract and

contract must not exclude behind the wheel drive tests

• minors must wait 14 days to retake failed behind the wheel drive test not including day of

failure

Before u begin DMV examiner will ask u to locate and demonstrate following - ANS - driver window - window on drivers side must be open

• windshield - windshield must allow full unblocked view and windshield cracks may postpone

test
