Describe how lines are used in towing.

Answer:

A towline of 8-10x boat length of anchor line. The line of the thickest, stretchiest rope you have. Tower uses a towing bridle that spreads the load to both sides of the boat. Adjust length so that boats are in sync with the waves.Bitter end to cleat on each side, intermediate wraps around winches. (Might also terminate lines to mast?)

What optional rigging might be required for a tow?

Answer:

In a following sea, towed boat may require a small drogue. The tow rope may

also require dampening: add weight to line, e.g., a rope-chain anchor rode

tied to another line, so length of chain is in the middle.

Procedure for towing dingy.

Answer:

At departure from mooring area, keep painter short so bow almost touches boat's stern. Underway, let out painter until dingy rides on the crest of the first or second stern wave, between 6 and 20 feet astern.
