Lift director, signalman, and operator – When using voice signals, according to ASME B30.5, these individuals must be present for the pre-lift discussion.

Limitations – A qualified signal person must have knowledge of the standard hand and voice signals along with a basic understanding of crane operations and limitations.

Tested – According to OSHA 1926.1419, before lifting operations begin, communication systems shall be tested.

Identify each other – Prior to commencing a crane lift, the operator and signal person shall identify each other.

Perspective – Any direction given to the crane operator by the signal person shall be given from the operator’s perspective.

Function and direction – The first element of voice signals given to a crane operator prior to the lift is function and direction.

Three – According to OSHA and ASME B30.5, each series of voice signals contains three elements.

Lift director – For lifting operations using voice signals, the lift director has the responsibility of permitting multiple simultaneous crane functions.

Standard signals – According to ASME B30.5, special signals cannot conflict with standard signals.

Back up – If the operator sounds three short audible signals while moving the crane, he/she intends to back up.

Stop – If the operator sounds one short audible signal while moving the crane, he/she intends to stop.

Job site location – According to ASME B30.5, any audible emergency signal must be agreed upon at the job site location.
