It is a barrier that allows the stomach to safely contain the gastric acid required for digestion. It protects the stomach lining because it has a thick coating of bicarbonate rich mucus which makes it a "neutral" zone.This neutral zone functions as a physical barrier to protect the stomach lining from the gastric acid of the stomach.
